As our business continues to expand, we need fabulous technical people to support us. This is a vital role, ensuring our customers have a positive user experience and to ensure this, you will liaise with other areas of the business.

We are looking for someone to install, maintain and manage the IT operational infrastructure, including the hardware, operating systems, network and applications and also to fulfil the role of Security Lead. You will have experience of administering Linux servers, ideally in an e-commerce environment and of server administration and troubleshooting. You will also have hands-on experience of information security in a corporate environment. In return, we will ensure that you develop a thorough understanding of our operational infrastructure and our corporate information security landscape.

Job description

Main responsibilities:

  1. Linux server installation, configuration and administration.
  2. Develop and support our Linux infrastructure.
  3. Ensure the smooth operation of our corporate websites.
  4. Engineer and architect suitable web and application hosting platforms.
  5. Establish and maintain information security standards and procedures in compliance with industry regulations and corporate security policy.
  6. Lead the information security function in accordance with the established policies and guidelines.
  7. Function as an internal consulting resource on information security issues.

Experience and skills

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills:

  • Experience of administering and troubleshooting Linux servers, ideally in an e-commerce environment.
  • Linux (Debian/Red Hat/Gentoo), Apache 2.x, MySQL 5.x, PHP 5.
  • Scripting - Bourne shell, Perl and/or PHP preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Internet protocols and services such as TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP and associated protocols.
  • Understanding of how to compile the Linux kernel and has a preferred filesystem.
  • Strong awareness of corporate information security, especially PCI DSS, SOX, DLP, network security.
  • Understanding of network routing, load balancers, switches, firewalls, etc.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.


Exposure to any of the following would be desirable:

  • Any other flavour of UNIX - *BSD / Solaris / AIX / HP-UX etc.
  • LAMP-based web hosting or e-commerce environments.
  • Cloud computing platforms, e.g. Amazon EC2 or Rackspace CloudServers.
  • Windows Server management.
  • Business continuity - backups, disaster recovery, etc.
  • MySQL scale-out, replication and/or clustering.
  • Virtualisation technologies, e.g. VMWare, Xen.
  • Revision control systems - Subversion, Git.
  • Security certifications would be beneficial but not essential – CISSP, GCIH, PCI QSA, CEH, CHECK, etc.
